Lying about an hour south-west of the Mar Menor, Lorca is the third largest city of Murcia.
Like Murcia itself and Cartagena, Lorca has a long and colourful history, which is reflected in its buildings and culture. The main attraction for visitors to Lorca is La Fortaleza del Sol - the enormous medieval castle located in the heart of the city - and the hugely popular Workshop of Time - a hands-on, living museum which shows the history of Lorca through the Roman and Moorish periods, through to the recoquest by the christians.
But there is far more to see in this fascinating city.
Plaza de España (Spanish Square), located in the heart of Lorca's historical center
Collegiate church of San Patricio (16th-17th centuries)
The Ayuntamiento (Town Hall), built in the 17th-18th centuries, initially as a prison
Columna Miliaria, a Roman military column
Medieval walls and gate of San Antonio (13th-early 14th centuries)
Municipal Archaeological ,Museum, housed in the Casa de los Salazar-Rosso (16th-17th centuries)
Monumental complex of Santo Domingo (16th-18th centuries) and the remains of a convent's cloister.
Church of San Francisco (1561-1735)
Palace of the counts of San Julián (17th century)
Huerto Ruano Palace, an urban villa from the 19th century
Los Cipreses archaeological park with findings from the Bronze Age
Lorca is not short of historically significant buildings to visit, but it is also a living, modern city. So, if history and sightseeing is not your cup of tea, Lorca can also offer a wide variety of high-end shops to browse around and plenty of excellent bars and restaurants where you can watch the world go by and sample some of the local delicacies and tapas. The city is small enough to walk around, but big enough to provide surprises at every turn.
